Why This Matters

The Upanishads are the source texts. The Bhagavad Gita distills them. Advaita Vedanta systematizes them. Adi Shankara took the philosophical insights scattered across the 13 principal Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras, and the Gita, and built them into a coherent philosophical system --- the most influential interpretation of Vedic thought in history.

If the Upanishads say "Tat Tvam Asi" (Thou art That), Advaita Vedanta explains exactly what that means, why we don't realize it, and how to realize it.

Every cross-tradition parallel tracked in this encyclopedia --- Hermeticism's "The All is Mind," Plotinus's One, Kabbalah's Ein Sof, the Law of One's Intelligent Infinity, Meister Eckhart's Godhead beyond God --- maps onto Advaita Vedanta's framework with stunning precision. The Core Teaching in Three Statements

Shankara condensed the entire Vedantic teaching into three propositions:

  1. Brahma Satyam --- Brahman alone is real (absolute, unchanging, eternal)
  2. Jagan Mithya --- The world is mithya (not "unreal" but dependent reality --- neither fully real nor fully unreal)
  3. Jivo Brahmaiva Na Aparah --- The individual self is not other than Brahman

Everything else --- Maya, Avidya, the three levels of reality, the method of liberation, Shankara's entire commentary tradition --- is elaboration on these three points.
